Green Steps Foundation
Have you ever wondered what you can do with flip-flops which are no longer wearable? The Tanzanian Green Steps Foundation has the perfect solution – highly skilled artisans create different types of art and crafts in all kinds of sizes from discarded flip-flops. Local people and organizations collect the sandals from beaches in and around Dar-es-Salam, mainland Tanzania and hand it over to the Green Steps Foundation.
The aim is to raise awareness about restoring the ecosystem and encouraging practices to reuse waste as well as create stylish and fun upcycled art with it. The artisans have been trained for over 6 months, trying out various approaches in their workshop in Dar-es-Salam until coming up with the perfect product composition. Their collection includes animal and tribal sculptures as well as home decorations like key rings and decorative pieces. The profits are used to support children with visual impairment.
