Activities:

Volunteering at the Kiviwama Tree Nursery and Reforestation Program

  • Tree nursery: Produce indigenous tree seedlings for planting and distribute them to local communities.
  • Tree planting: Participate in tree planting activities at local schools, typically conducted during the rainy seasons.

Activities on Our Land in Karanga

  • Botanical garden: Help develop a botanical garden that conserves seed diversity and learn about the importance of genetic diversity for farmers.
  • Bamboo workshops: Learn how to make sustainable products from bamboo and promote its use as a sustainable alternative.
  • Natural handcrafts workshops: Learn how to make handicrafts and other useful items from natural materials.
  • Briquettes production (planning phase): Help develop a project to produce briquettes from organic waste material for energy-efficient cooking.
  • Composting: Compost organic food waste to produce fertile soil.
  • Aquaponics: Maintain and operate a small aquaponics system for demonstration purposes.
  • African Blackwood Conservation Project: Help grow seedlings of African Blackwood, a threatened hardwood tree.
  • Environmental education at schools: Teach children about environmental topics and share information about your home country.
  • Community work in Mweka Chagga village: Learn about the Chagga culture and help the village community with tasks such as harvest or repairing buildings.

Locations and Accommodation:
  • Accommodation will be provided at Siarick Cottages, a new guesthouse with private bathrooms, hot showers, and solar lighting.
  • Breakfast and dinner will be served at the guesthouse, with lunch either provided there or packed for you depending on the activity location.
  • Volunteers will stay in same-sex rooms with 3 single beds.

Requirements and Participation:
  • Everyone can participate in this program. No previous knowledge is required. The minimum age of individuals joining the program is 16 years. Unaccompanied minors need a written agreement by their legal guardian. There is no maximum age. Families including small children can join the program. Children up to 4 years are free to join. Child rates apply to children aged 5-16.
