Practical Permaculture Institute

Permaculture is a philosophy of agriculture design principles which are derived from observing the ecosystem and integrating plants and animals in all their functions. Originally, permaculture stood for “permanent agriculture” but nowadays it has been expanded to “permanent culture” to include social aspects.

The approach can also extend to ecological building, appropriate technology, education and economics. Whereas industrial agricultural methods usually depend on non-renewable resources and practices which lead to deteriorated soil quality and a reduction of biodiversity, permaculture techniques acknowledge the synergies between different species in order to bring maximum benefit to the environment.

There are three basic ethics on which permaculture is built: earth care, people care and fair share. ‘Earth care’ implies that all life systems should be respected for the functions they perform in order to guarantee organic growth leading to a sustainable life on Earth. ‘People care’ fosters the need for companionship and joint efforts to bring out the best result for everyone involved. The ‘fair share’ principle stands for only taking what one needs and sharing with the community.

The Practical Permaculture Institute Zanzibar (PPIZ) has been built on 5 acres of land as an educational and demonstration site. PPIZ’s purpose is to train as many locals as possible such as primary school teachers, women, youth and farmers in order for them to gain self-reliance, food and water security, environmental recovery and regenerated livelihoods. On the premises, you will find an organic vegetable garden, greywater management system, swales, food forests, composting toilets, solar power, plant nursery and rocket stoves among others.

Learn more about permaculture and the principles and visit one of their tours, workshops or courses, be it the Permaculture Introduction tour, Full-day Permaculture Introduction workshop or the 5-day Permaculture workshop.

Your financial contribution is directly supporting future training for locals and educational programs.
