Release a Turtle in Zanzibar. Transfer from Nungwi/Kendwa/Kiwengwa/Matemwe
USD 185.00
Would you like to be part of a sea turtle release? Sea turtles are endangered species. Visiting “Turtle and Tortoise Land Zanzibar” give you the chance to learn more about these adorable creatures and help those species to survive. You’ll get to meet the local project side of the turtle sanctuary in Jozani, just next to the National Park. The impoverished farmers are trying to generate funds from tourists who pay an admission fee to see the marine turtles. The funds are used to compensate members of the cooperative whose fruits have been lost to Red Colobus Monkeys and conservation area of Jozani Forest. Marine turtles with injuries or which were found on illegal fish markets are looked after and raised in a large pond near by the mangrove forest. The staff members are continuously working to improve the chances of survival for the endangered sea turtles by increasing awareness within the local population (and visitors) of the importance of preserving the natural turtle population e.g. not catching them for food, resale, shell etc.
The conservation technique of releasing older turtles called “head-starting” should ensure their better survival in the wild. Selected release days will not only save the natural population of sea turtles it will especially promote conservation of the turtle population at the Turtle and Tortoise Land and increases an additional income generation for the community. We will pick you up from your accommodation in Nungwi/Kendwa/Kikengwa/Matemwe area, and welcome you at the “Turtle and Tortoise Land Zanzibar” where you will get a guided tour with detailed information about the various species. We will introduce you to your turtle which will be released and arrange your drive to the open water area. We will drive you to the coastline, in the southern area of the island called Makunduchi. In some cases you will move into a local dhow which will carry you and your turtle to the open water or reef area where your turtle will be released into its natural habitat. To ensure that the turtle swims to safety the boat will remain for some time at the area.
