Ecological & Social Footprint
The Elewana Elephant Pepper Camp uses a borehole and rainwater as their source of water. Grey water is reused for the surrounding wetland and sewage is diverted to septic tanks. The lodge is run on 100% of solar power. The camp promotes a no plastic policy eliminating plastic straws, bottles and bags from their operations. Whereas the waste is separated, recycled and disposed of in Nairobi the organic food waste stays on the compost of the grounds.
The majority of the staff comes from the surrounding villages and receives regular in-house training in order to provide the customer with exceptional service. The Elewana Pepper Camp’s bednight fees and lease payments are an integral part for the Maasai landowners who are then able to rely on a fixed income giving them the opportunity to set up local businesses and invest in the education of the next generations.
The Elewana group’s Wildlife Warrior Program funds fun and educational activities such as drama, art and story writing for hundreds of school children with the aim to share knowledge about wildlife conservation. The best conservationists are rewarded with scholarships for their primary and secondary schooling. The Elewana Pepper Camp also supports the local school with the construction of classrooms, a kitchen and equipment such as desk and chairs. The Elewana Elephant Pepper camp has obtained Gold Level for the Eco-Tourism Kenya certification program.
