Ecological & Social Footprint
The Elewana Elsa’s Kopje uses a borehole as their source of water which is then treated and available via a dispenser unit. Grey water is reused for the surrounding land and sewage is diverted to septic tanks. The lodge is run on approximately 70% of solar power supplementing the remaining 30% with generators. The camp promotes a no plastic policy and waste is separated, recycled and disposed of in Nairobi. The majority of the staff comes from the surrounding villages and receives regular in-house training in order to provide the customer with exceptional service.
The Elewana Elsa’s Kopje Camp can proudly say that due to their investment and presence in the Meru National Park they have saved the land from being turned into crop plantations by the government.
The Born Free Foundation, which is funded by lease payments and park fees of the camps and visitors, played an important part in restoring the land as a national park, building infrastructure and implementing security networks against poaching and the building of a rhino sanctuary. The camp also supports the local school with much-needed school supplies such as text books and the finishing of three classrooms.
The Elewana group’s Wildlife Warrior Program funds fun and educational activities such as drama, art and story writing for hundreds of school children with the aim to share knowledge about wildlife conservation. The best conservationists are rewarded with scholarships for their primary and secondary schooling.
The Land & Life Foundation of Elewana and Cheli & Peacock Safaris aims to provide solutions for preserving the wildlife and habitats while at the same time providing a regular income for the local community. The Elewana Elsa’s Kopje has obtained Gold Level from the Eco-Tourism Kenya certification program.
