Ecological & Social Footprint
The Asilia Group has been certified by various international and national responsible tourism certification bodies such as the Ecotourism Kenya Society reaching a Silver and Gold level for many camps. Social and environmental conservation projects are continuously running in all regions where the group operates and are funded by a 5$ per person per night responsible tourism levy, guest donations and direct donations by Asilia.
The main focus of the AsiliaGiving initiatives is the environmental protection of wildlife and habitat as well as the development of communities including community health, the advancement of education and communication to promote and increase the appreciation and value of the biodiversity and nature. The initiatives include among others: scholarships for tourism management courses, local community forestation programmes, the forging of new skills to provide an alternative to poaching, the provision of solutions to human and wildlife conflicts and the monitoring of the wildlife population’s health.
The Mara Bush Houses are approximately run on 60% of solar power and emissions from fossil-fuel consumption in Kenya are off-set through Carbon Tanzania. The water consumption at the camp is monitored closely with a community borehole being the source of origin. Sewage is passed through a septic tank and then to a soak away and the camp has an on-request towel and linen change policy to further save water and energy. Waste is collected and separated and brought back to Nairobi.
Around 90% of the staff comes directly from the surrounding villages providing employment and an alternative means of income. The staff is trained on a regular basis by in-house specialists and they can furthermore participate in online training courses.
The Mara Bush Houses are leasing the land from the Maasai community which ensures a regular source of income for the land owners. The Houses support the Maa Trust which is a 400 Maasai women beading group and sells their products in the on-site shop.
Furthermore, the Houses support the local school with supplies such as book donations, desks and chairs.
