Ecological & Social Footprint
The Kyaninga Lodge uses water in a responsible way through rain water harvesting for the adjacent dairy farm, grey water reuse for watering trees and filling up the swimming pool with water from the lake. Researchers have come to the conclusion that the consumption of water which is used by the lodge in one year is equivalent to one heavy rainfall.
The lodge runs on nearly 100% solar power and has an on-request towel and linen change policy to further save water and energy. Waste is separated and recycled and organic waste is composted on the grounds. The staff comes from the surrounding villages and ingredients and supplies are sourced as freshly as possible from the local markets while herbs and salad are grown on their own premises.
The lodge owners have founded the Kyaninga Child Development Centre which supports children with disabilities in Fort Portal with much needed physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy. The Centre is now linked to the Kyaninga Dairy farm project which aims to support the centre with its profits from producing and selling goats cheese in Uganda in order to be completely self-sufficient.
The lodge also set up the Kyaninga Forest Foundation whose goal is to restore and manage degraded and destroyed forest around the lodge through reforestation, sensitization of the surrounding communities and seedling distribution.
Things To Do
Have a plunge in Lake Kyaninga – one of the cleanest lakes in East Africa and free of Bilharzia – and follow the direct access via a few steps from the lodge. Discover the rim of the crater during a comfortable stroll and enjoy the stunning views of the lake and the Rwenzori mountains. Chances are high that you come across Vervet and Red Colobus Monkeys. If you want to make your way through deeper terrain choose to go on one of the forest walks. Get to know the surrounding communities through a village and cultural walk if you want to interact with the local community. Chimpanzee Safari: The lodge is situated close to Kibale Forest – an evergreen rainforest with the highest density of Chimpanzees in the world. Having at least 60 species of mammal of which 13 are primates you can be sure to have an unforgettable experience coming that close to our closest living relatives. The lodge helps to facilitate the trekking permits which are subject to availability, therefore, we recommend to book early in advance. Gorilla Trekking: The Bwindi rainforest is home to about half of the 800 still existing Mountain Gorillas with whom you can come face to face during a guided trekking adventure. The lodge helps to facilitate the trekking permits which are subject to availability, therefore, we recommend to book early in advance.
