Ecological & Social footprint
For the Blue Oyster Hotel’s management the implementation of sustainable practices has been a key factor since their beginning in 1999. As of 2016, the hotel has been certified by the Tanzanian Responsible Tourism Organization (www.rttz.org) reaching level 3 (Tree).
Facilities such as a pool and air conditioning are not offered as the hotel wants to reduce the environmental impact in terms of water and energy consumption.
A strong emphasis is put on proper waste management therefore the waste is separated between glass, plastic, compost and remaining rubbish which is picked up by a privately owned company which is specialized in responsible disposal of waste. Energy and water are saved through various initiatives such as no linen and towel change policy unless the guest requests it, energy saving lamps, solar water heating, low flush toilets and responsible irrigation of the greenery.
The Blue Oyster Hotel actively supports the village Jambiani through numerous projects and initiatives such as investing in medical equipment, medical education and coordination of the construction of new clinic facilities, paying for education and day care for employee’s children, giving out micro loans and repairing the village’s water pump just to name a few. The hotel participates in village and beach clean ups and undertakes environmental awareness training for local villagers.
Many staff members have been working at the hotel since the beginning in 1999 and receive an attractive compensation and health insurance. The staff receives regular training in kitchen hygiene, first aid and fire extinguishing. They can also receive additional courses such as Yoga or English if asked for.
Throughout the premises local wood constructions and palm thatched roofs are used. The hotel has long-lasting relationships with their local suppliers and the majority of ingredients is sourced from Zanzibar and organically bought whenever possible
