The Karamba has been built with a high percentage of locally sourced construction material and you will find wood being the major element throughout the premises. The priority of Karamba is to employ their staff from Kizimkazi therefore the majority of the staff is from the village. The employees also receive training such as permaculture which they not only can implement at Karamba but can also use for their own horticultural gardens.
The ingredients are sourced locally from the village or the surrounding areas and Karamba works together with locals who have been trained by them to cultivate their garden in an organic way. The owner and manager Gemma has been continuously involved in the local community for many years. She regularly donates to the local school, supports the football team with uniforms, shoes and footballs and is a sponsor of the yearly dhow race. She also coordinates and cooperates with other non-governmental-organizations which are temporarily or permanently active in the village of Kizimkazi.
