Ecological & Social footprint
The Mnemba Island Lodge counts with their own desalination plant to filter water from the ocean and grey water as well as sewage are diverted to septic tanks which are then filtered by rock and sand. The Lodge relies on diesel generators for electricity as their intent to switch to solar energy was not successful due to the high amount of forest areas on the island. They nevertheless have a green committee which is regularly discussing and implementing ideas to use the provided energy in the most efficient way. Waste is separated and recycled and plastic is intended to be avoided for example through the use of refillable glass jars for guest amenities.
The majority of staff comes from Zanzibar and they receive regular in-house training in not only the hospitality field but also in language and health topics. The Lodge also offers a 3-month practical trainee program on the island giving students the chance to train in a luxurious hospitality environment.
Mnemba Island Lodge teams up with the Africa Foundation and together they have funded environmental awareness training with school children and fishermen as well as the construction of school classrooms and teachers accommodation in several communities on the main island of Zanzibar. Another fruitful partnership is the one with the Oceans Without borders which aims to reduce the dependence of communities on the ocean and focuses on small business development as an alternative source of income.
The Lodge also plays an important role for the islands and surrounding marine area’s conservation of nature and animals. The island is the only protected nesting site for the Green Turtle whose eggs are protected during the hatching season. The island has successfully incremented the number of animals of the two rare antelope species Ader’s Dukier and Suni and is continuously monitoring their breeding and growth habits.
Things To Do
The island is surrounded by a coral atoll where the house reef can even be reached without a boat. Situated in a marine conservation area the outstainding marine life can be observed during a dive or snorkeling trip which start directly from the island with through the Mnemba Island PADI diving school. Embark on a dhow sailing cruise or enjoy fishing, birdwatching or other water sport activities.
Go a an expedition to the inner part of the island and find the Suni antelope and Ader’s duiker. If you are lucky you can even observe turle hatchlings during the hatching season.
