Chako

Find out how glass, bottles, dhow sails and print material are given a new life by transforming them into beautifully designed lamps, bags and bead curtains. The company Chako is a social, creative and environmental enterprise using waste material from the tourism industry to create newly designed objects in order to reduce the environmental footprint of the hospitality sector.

Tour

The tour starts at Zenji Boutique Hotel on Malawi Road where you can refresh yourself with a soft drink (included) before visiting the nearby Darajani market. Afterwards, the guide takes you to the local transport stand where you will board a “Dalla-Dalla” truck to Mwanakwerekwe.

There you will first visit the oldest and biggest market of Zanzibar. You will then proceed with a tour of the Chako workshop where you can meet the staff, see the equipment used and get an understanding of how waste is being transformed into art. The tour finishes with the guide taking you back to Stone Town by “Dalla-Dalla”.
